What Is Mid-Career Crisis? And What Are The Ways To Overcome It?
Mid-career Crisis is often faced by individuals having 10 to 25 years of experience in a specific field. Although as per the Harvard Business Review, the definite reason behind the occurrence of this crisis is not certain, however it is believed that it happens when a person finds himself in a job or field that he no longer think is satisfying or rewarding.
Mid-career crisis makes you feel stuck, it is that point of your career where you feel exhausted from what you are doing and nothing related to your work excites you. It makes you feel demotivated and you somehow starts questioning yourself about the purpose of doing your job. It can be faced by anyone regardless of their field, job, or even salary. A person could be having mid-career crisis even in fulfilling jobs. They are often considered as best-kept secret among professionals.
Following are some of the most effective ways that will help you rekindle your passion for work:
The first step to overcome a mid-career crisis is to believe in yourself. Because as this crisis will suck out all the motivation from your life, you yourself have to be the source of motivation. It plays a crucial part in bringing back the purpose of your job. When nothing really works for you, motivation keeps you going and that is why it is very important to remain motivated in this situation.
Even after so many attempts if you are unable to find enough motivation for yourself then it is advised to take a break. Because maybe you are fed up from your job and that is making you feel exhausted. So it is better to relax and take a break for a while before you indulge yourself in your job again.
Going on a holiday is highly advised in this kind of scenario. Because sometimes being fed-up from your job is misunderstood as having a mid-career crisis.
3. Strategic Planning
You must have heard that nothing great happens without planning. If you are looking forward to bring your career back on track that you must have a strategic planning about what you are going to do further. You should research about the ongoing technologies and must-have skills that you find interesting and start working on that in order to bring back the spark in your work-life.
It is hard to find a solution when you yourself are confused about the root cause of it. So it is better to introspect your situation and think about what could’ve caused it. As a mid-career crisis could be due to a number of reasons and different problems need different solutions. Is it because you no longer feel interested in your job? Is it because work-stress or some other reason. Just find the root cause and act accordingly.
5. Prepare Yourself For Some Risk Taking
If you have tried everything and nothing really seems to be working then maybe its time to step out of your comfort zone. Sometimes some change in routine is all you need to overcome mid-career crisis. It is better to take some chances for some future happiness instead of being stuck in misery.
6. Do/Learn Something New Everyday
It is obvious to get tired of monotonous life. And in this scenario learning or doing some new things will help you break the monotony. You can also try this inside your job by asking your boss to give you some challenges or to incorporate some new tasks that will interest you.
